According to Daily Star, West Ham boss, David Moyes is planning for a reunion with his former protege, Seamus Coleman. Moyes wants to bring the veteran defender to West Ham, having worked with him during his time at Everton.
Seamus Coleman started his youth career at St. Catherine’s FC before moving to Sligo Rovers in 2006. While he did not get many chances in his first season with the senior team, he started getting more game time from the second season onwards.
The 31-year-old veteran made a total of 26 appearances for the Irish side before leaving for Everton in 2009. He was, however, immediately sent on loan to Blackpool for the remainder of the season. Coleman played just 12 games for the side but ended up with 5 assists to his name.
After his short loan spell, Moyes instated him as the first choice right-back at Everton. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Spending over a decade at the club, he has played over 322 games, scored 26 goals and assisted 29 more (source – Transfermarkt).
He is also a veteran of the Republic of Ireland team with 56 appearances to date.
David Moyes is looking for defensive reinforcements after suffering two defeats in the opening two league games against Newcastle and Arsenal. More importantly, they need a right-back urgently, with Ryan Fredericks out injured (source – West Ham official website).
They just have youngster Ben Johnson as the sole fit right-back now. This leaves Moyes in a precarious position. The addition of Seamus Coleman would solve that issue, however. Coleman comes with huge experience and leadership attributes that would benefit the Hammers.
David Moyes would surely like to work again with a player that he brought to Everton. The player also has good memories of working with Moyes until he left to manage Manchester United.
Not only would the signing of Coleman solve the right-back issue, it would shore up their entire defence. Coleman is a leader and with his qualities and camaraderie with Moyes, they can help West Ham become stronger defensively.
Granted, his age isn’t exactly at the right point but 31 isn’t that old for a defender. The Hammers definitely need him and should do everything within their powers to reunite him with Moyes.
