Why Wolves allowing Ryan Bennett to leave is a good move
According to FourFourTwo (h/t Birmingham Live), Wolves could allow defender Ryan Bennett to leave the club before the transfer window closes.
The report also claims that there is interest from teams in the Premier League, Championship and the Scottish Premiership, meaning Bennett could leave before Friday’s deadline.
Bennett, 29, came through the ranks of Ipswich Town’s youth system and played for Grimsby Town, Peterborough and Norwich City before joining Wolves in the summer of 2017. He was a key member of the side that got promoted to the top-flight by the end of the 2017/18 season.
In his three years at the Molineux, Bennett has made 92 appearances, scoring 3 goals while assisting once. He featured regularly in his first two campaigns with Wolves but this term, he has fallen out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Despite Willy Boly’s long-term injury, the Englishman did not feature much in the heart of the defence this season. The Portuguese manager opted to use midfielders Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss in Boly’s absence instead, with youngster Max Kilman also moving ahead of Bennett in the pecking order.
Wolves have also cut-short Spaniard Jesus Vallejo’s loan deal after Boly’s return to the first-team squad last week, according to the report. Bennett has made just 7 starts in the league so far and has not contributed much to the team’s cause. And keeping him would be a waste of resources for the club.
Wolves have been in scintillating form this season and are currently 7th in the league table. They are also in the race for the Europa League as they have advanced to the Round of 32 in the competition.
Their attacking unit has been delivering with Raul Jimenez leading them brilliantly in all the competitions. Conor Coady, Dendoncker and Saiss have formed a strong partnership at the heart of the defence and Bennett’s chances do look bleak.
Apart from them, the manager also has Kilman and Boly at his disposal. Therefore, allowing the 29-year-old to leave the club would be a good decision.
Verdict
Bennett, who has attracted interest from other clubs, as per the report, has the chance to revive his career elsewhere and he should grab the opportunity at the earliest. Deciding to stay at the Molineux would be a problem and therefore, Wolves parting ways with Bennett would be ideal for all parties involved.
