According to Express, Wolves are planning an audacious swoop for Georginio Wijnaldum of Liverpool. Barcelona and Inter Milan had emerged as frontrunners to sign him but Wolves could swoop in at the last minute. Wijnaldum’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season and that has led to speculation about his future.
Ever since his move to Newcastle and then Liverpool, the Dutchman has been one of the most underrated players in the top-flight. Wijnaldum is one of the best utility players available at this point. He can fit into a variety of midfield roles.
The 30-year-old has made 209 appearances for the Reds, scoring 20 goals and assisting 16 more. The midfielder has scored some vital goals for Liverpool over the last few seasons like the brace in the second leg against Barcelona in 2019. He was also a huge part of their title winning side in 2020.
For over two seasons, Wolves have been one of the better teams in the Premier League. They have a trademark style of play to frustrate opponents and trouble them with their incisive attacks. They have a very capable team to pull that off. However, they should not pass up the opportunity to add a world-class midfielder to their ranks.
Not only would Wijnaldum add to the depth of the side, he would improve the quality of the midfield as well. Wolves are surprisingly understocked in central midfield, with only the likes of Neves, Dendoncker, Moutinho and Vitinha at their disposal. Let’s not forget that Moutinho is already 34.
It would be a no-brainer to move for a player like Wijnaldum, who is dynamic and adds to both ends of the pitch. He is a workhorse and does not stop running until the final whistle.
There is also his knack for popping up with goals, which would no doubt appeal to Nuno Espirito Santo. Wolves would be doing no wrong moving ahead of the queue to snap up the Dutchman. It would be a very smart buy for the side in all aspects.
