Why Wout Weghorst would be a top-class addition for Tottenham

According to Sport Witness (h/t Football.london), Tottenham are still interested in signing Wout Weghorst after passing up the chance to sign him in the summer. Spurs are said to be keen on signing him in January despite signing Carlos Vinicius on loan. Weghorst claims in the report that he wants to move to England. He is valued by Wolfsburg at around €35million.

Profile

Wout Weghorst is a 28-year-old Dutch striker who plays for VfL Wolfsburg. He started his youth career at NEO Borne and also played for the likes of DETO Twenterand and Willem II. It was at FC Emmen that he got a taste of first-team action as he spent two seasons there, playing 66 games and scoring 21 goals.

He moved to Heracles Almelo in 2014. Another two seasons were spent there, with him scoring 24 goals and 8 assists in 73 games (source – Transfermarkt). In 2016, he made the move to AZ Alkmaar and started his goalscoring spree. He played a total of 86 games for them and scored 45 goals and 13 assists.

The rich vein of form continued as he moved to Germany and signed for Wolfsburg. In the 95 appearances for the German outfit, he has contributed to 62 goals (49 goals +13 assists). A rather baffling fact is that he just has 4 appearances for the Netherlands despite producing stellar numbers consistently at club level.

Weghorst can add a different dimension to the Tottenham attack

It’s true that Spurs finally managed to sign a striker to backup and partner for Harry Kane when they got Carlos Vinicius. However, they should not let their interest in Weghorst fade as the player himself was interested in a move. This season, Spurs have been fantastic and are just 3 points off the top of the table.

Harry Kane seems to have found a new facet to his game, which is playmaking. Heun-Min Son has kept up his goalscoring spree as well. Now imagine adding a classic No.9 like Weghorst in that mix. His records say that he has kept firing on all cylinders in the last few seasons. That is something Mourinho could use.

If Mourinho can figure out a way to use Kane, Son and Weghorst in the starting XI, it would be a devastating combination. Kane and Son’s intelligent running and positioning could work perfectly in tandem with Weghorst’s ability to play with his back facing the goal. Splashing €35million on such a prolific striker would be good business by the club.
