After winning the 2022 French Open title, Rafael Nadal hinted that he may soon have to draw curtains on his illustrious career.
Rafael Nadal once again proved why he is widely known as the ‘King of Clay’ after beating Casper Ruud in the final of the 2022 Roland Garros. The Spaniard secured a comfortable victory in straight sets to win a record-extending 14th French Open crown.
With 22 Grand Slam titles so far, Nadal has most certainly etched himself as one of the greatest players of all time. However, at 36, it remains to be seen how long the tennis legend can maintain his incredible levels of consistency.
Nevertheless, Nadal stunned fans with his recent update on his future. The tennis superstar, who suffered an injury at the Italian Open, was questionable to play in the French Open. However, after winning the Roland Garros, Nadal has now addressed his fans that his injuries are taking a toll on him.
Rafael Nadal hints at potential retirement?
While speaking after winning his French Open title on Sunday, Nadal said that he was glad to still be able to play tennis at his age, “I for sure never believed I’d be here at 36 being competitive again. Playing in the most important court of my career one more time. Means a lot to me. I don’t know what’s gonna happen in future but I am gonna keep fighting. To try to keep going. So many thanks.”
He then went on to add that he may not be able to continue playing at the highest of levels, hinting that he may have to call it quits soon, “I can’t confirm anything. I need to find a solution. I can’t keep going the way I’m going.”
Several fans on social media were left stunned by Nadal’s comments. However, only time will tell whether he will continue playing and for how long.
