Will Smith promised fans he and Chris Rock would 'be friends again' after the Oscars slap
It was the slap that was witnessed by everyone. Chris Rock was presenting the Oscar for best documentary feature three hours into the 2022 ceremony when Will Smith stormed onto the stage and slapped him for remarks he made about Jada Pinkett Smith on live television. Smith repeatedly apologized as a result of the episode, which came before a barrage of criticism.
In a YouTube video from July 2022, Smith promised followers that “if you hang on, I promise we’ll be able to be friends again.” Rock, for his part, kept quiet about the situation until he unloaded on Netflix in a no-holds-barred comedy special called “Selective Outrage.”
Rock declared, “I have supported Will Smith my entire life. And right now, I just watch “Emancipation” to see him get beat up. Previously, the two co-starred in Spike Lee’s 1999 mockumentary “Torrance Rises” and collaborated on a 1995 episode of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” with good chemistry. Rock and Pinkett Smith eventually collaborated on the “Madagascar” film series.
According to a psychotherapist, friendships are complex, and their conclusion is not usually the result of finger-pointing. There are many reasons why a friendship may deteriorate, according to Smith, but occasionally we must accept responsibility for a rift.
According to Smith, friendships can be strained by anything from changing cities to having opposite ideals. In the case of Smith and Rock, the night of the slap left both parties feeling as though the other had mistreated them. Smith advised figuring out the source of the anger when this occurs.

“Often, we’ll avoid dealing with the main stressor and take it out on the person who least deserves it. This could be a friend, family member, spouse, or other close relationship,” according to Smith. This does not imply that a friendship cannot be repaired after a dispute, though. Friends will need to choose whether the friendship is worth mending after an altercation.
According to Smith, for the friendship to flourish once more, both parties must be willing to mend it. That may entail getting everyone together to talk about the issue or enlisting outside assistance from a qualified professional.
“A therapist will assist them in re-establishing the friendship by assisting them in examining how it began. I believe that we must consider the past to properly focus on the present,” he added.
“Some friendships will come to an end, which some people find difficult to accept. That makes sense,” he said. “You won’t be able to keep up relationships with everyone that enters your life. We often run into these issues because we’re trying to make seasonal employees a lifetime commitment,” he continued.
Smith emphasized the importance of friendships in learning how to express regret and forgiveness. Smith claims that honestly saying “I’m sorry” to someone starts the process of forgiveness, giving that person the chance to let go of their injured feelings.
If all else fails, Smith told Insider that it’s acceptable to be sad over a strained friendship “We don’t only cry when a loved one passes away. Even if the individual is still alive, we mourn the loss of relationships,” he continued. He said, “Sometimes friendships aren’t meant to last forever, and that’s okay.”
