The 2021 Wimbledon Championships return after a cancellation last year and here is a breakdown of the prize money on offer

Wimbledon is one of the elite events in the sporting calendar in 2021. This year, tennis returns to the All England Club after a withdrawal in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It has been held at the All England Club, South London since 1877.

During the entire season, players earn different sums of money based on the event. ATP 1000s are the biggest event after the Grand Slams, followed by the ATP 500 and ATP 250 events. The number denotes the number of ranking points obtained by the winner of the tournament.

However, for the smaller players an entry to the main draw of Wimbledon is sure to increase their prize money drastically.

In 2021, the prize money for the Gentleman’s singles and Women’s singles have been modified due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Fans will be permitted in reduced numbers and the pool has been slashed by 5.2%.

This year, World No.1 Novak Djokovic is the favorite to pocket a figure of £1.7million. In the last edition of the tournament, the Serb took home a prize of £2.35million.

The All England Club in 2007 decided to award male and female players equal prize money to comply with other Grand Slams.

In the first edition of Wimbledon in the Open era in 1968, the prize money on offer was £26,150. This was divided among all players with the men’s singles winner earning £2,000 and the women’s singles winner earning a meagre £750.

The last eight in the tournament are assured to receive a little more than a quarter of a million. The winner’s amount could be less compared to sponsorship deals for the elite players. This includes Uniqlo with Roger Federer, Lacoste with Novak Djokovic etc.

Wimbledon 2021 is beginning on Monday 28th June and will be the third Grand Slam of the season. Novak Djokovic is looking to earn a ‘Novak Slam’, after wins in Melbourne and Paris this year. With the absence of Rafael Nadal, his path to a sixth title looks fairly smooth.

8-time champion Roger Federer, who turns 40 in August faces a tough test to make it out of the opening rounds at the All England Club.

What is the Wimbledon 2021 prize money for the other rounds?

For many players, an entrance in a Grand Slam is a significant achievement having spending most part of their career in Challenger tournaments.

The players who qualify for the main draw are sure to pocket a minimum of £48,000. The battle gets tougher as the rounds progress with a steady increase in prize money. Players losing in the first singles qualifying round at Wimbledon are paid £7,000. Young talents who make it out of the first rounds can pocket upto £181,000, if they reach the last 16.

The doubles winners receive £480,000 as prize money this year at Wimbledon while the mixed doubles receive £100,000.
