Some of the favorites to win Wimbledon 2022 have already been shown the door by some lower-ranked players.
The world No. 1 Iga Swiatek was ousted in the third round by world No. 37 Alize Cornet. World No. 5 Maria Sakkari was shown the door by world No. 103 Tatjana Maria. The list just goes on.
Let’s take a look at the couple of women’s quarter-final matches that will take place on July 6.
Alja Tomljanovic versus Elena Rybakina
The world No. 44 won her first two matches with ease against Jil Teichmann (6-2, 6-3) and Catherine Harrison (6-2, 6-2). She made a terrific comeback in her third-round match against Barbora Krejcikova after losing the first set. The 29-year-old won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. In her fourth-round clash against Alize Cornet, Tomljanovic once again came back after losing the first set to eventually get the win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Two come-from-behind victories will surely hold her in good stead before she takes on Elena Rybakina in the quarter-final.
Elena Rybakina has reached the quarter-final stage for the first time in her career as far as Wimbledon is concerned. The world No. 23 has not dropped a set in the four matches she has played till now. The 2022 Adelaide International finalist defeated CoCo Vandeweghe in the first round. She followed it up with wins over Bianca Andreescu, Qinwen Zheng, and Petra Martic in her following three fixtures.
Head to Head: 1-0, in favor of Elena Rybakina
Prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in two sets.
Simona Halep versus Amanda Anisimova
The former World No. 1 Simona Halep is one of the favorites to win the tournament as things stand. She won the Wimbledon competition in 2019. She also has a French Open title in her trophy cabinet. The 30-year-old has not had to break too much sweat in the tournament till now. She has made light work of her opponents till now. The Romanian has wins over Karolina Muchova, Kirsten Flipkens, Magdalena Frech, and Paula Badrosa en route to sealing her spot in the quarter-finals. She has just lost 22 games in the four matches she has played till now. Her French Open 2022 campaign ended in the second round but a triumph at Wimbledon will help her forget the debacle.
Amanda Anisimova is only 20 years old and is all set to play her first Wimbledon quarter-final. She made it to the semi-finals of the 2019 French Open so she is not new to this stage of a Grand Slam competition. She eased past Yue Yuan in the first round in straight sets. In the second and third rounds, she had to fight back after losing the first set to Lauren Davis and Coco Gauff respectively. The American managed to topple the in-form Harmony Tan in the Round of 16 to seal her spot in the quarter-finals.
Head to Head: 2-1, in favor of Simona Halep.
Prediction: Simona Halep to win in 3 sets.
