ATP and WTA protested the call and decided that Wimbledon would be stripped of ranking points. That is why the champion of the men’s singles event – Novak Djokovic dropped four spots in the ranking and is currently at No. 7 on the list despite the triumph.
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan won the women’s singles event after defeating the overwhelming favorite Ons Jabeur in the final 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The 23-year-old was born in Moscow, Russia on 17 June 1999. She resides in Kazakhstan and has changed her nationality. However, she still has a house in Moscow. She represented Russia during the Wimbledon juniors event. The tennis federation of Kazakhstan offered the talented player some top tennis infrastructure and a paid stipend among other amenities and Rybakina decided to represent the country at the tennis events.
After Rybakina became the first Kazakhstani player to win a Grand Slam, the Russians are considering her triumph their own. A state-controlled media outlet put the headline ‘Russian-born Rybakina triumphs at Wimbledon’ on their website.
The youngster had to make a tough call. She had two opportunities in front of her. We will discuss them in the following section.
When she became an adult, she had to choose between taking the scholarship offered to her to complete her collegiate education in America or going for the substantial financial offer presented to her by the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation.
She took the second option as she wanted to focus on her tennis career and relocated to Kazakhstan and began representing the country at the international level from 2019 onwards.
