Fabio Fognini and Dusan Lajovic have lacked consistency so far this season. They will lock horns in the round of 64 of the Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday.
The World No. 61 has won 14 matches thus far while having faced defeat on 16 occasions. He had promising campaigns at the Serbian Open and the Rio Open where he made it to the semifinals. However, his outings in the other tournaments have been far from what he would have hoped for.
The former top-10 player made it to the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters after defeating Marcos Giron in the qualifiers. Fognini outplayed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the round of 64. However, the Italian tennis pro’s run ended in the round of 32 as he fought hard but eventually lost the match against Andrey Rublev.
The Serbian has won 10 matches and lost as many in 2022. He reached the quarterfinals of the Austrian Open in July before losing against Filip Misolic.
At the recently-concluded Cincinnati Masters, Lajovic won his first qualifying match against Stefan Kozlov before losing the second against Lorenzo Musetti. The 32-year-old has slipped to No. 87 and would hope for a better showing at the Winston-Salem Open.
The head-to-head scoreline between the two veterans currently stands at 1-0 in favor of the Italian. Fognini defeated Lajovic when they met in the final of the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters.
We are expecting a close contest and the 35-year-old might just get the win.
Prediction: Fabio Fognini to win in three sets.
