Wolves should sign Ademola Lookman in January to bolster squad depth

According to an earlier report from Sky Sports, Everton’s young sensation Ademola Lookman was linked with a £25 million move to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. However, a move fell through due to Everton’s excessive asking price for the 21-year-old and Lookman stayed at Goodison Park to fight for a place in the team.

It hasn’t been a happy season so far for Lookman under Marco Silva. Constantly sitting on the sidelines is not something that any youngster would want in the developmental stage of his career. And it has once again been the same old story for Lookman this term in the Premier League.

After making a total of 4 starts in the Premier League over the course of 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, Lookman’s involvement has been limited to only a single start so far this term. He has made a total of 11 appearances in the league this season but has played a ridiculously meagre 309 minutes. In all honesty, a player of his calibre deserves to play a lot more and his career is just being wasted away by constantly warming the benches at Goodison Park.

Theo Walcott has been well below-par this season and it is quite inexplicable as to why Marco Silva hasn’t opted to use Lookman on a more regular basis. Lookman has found regular minutes hard to come by and a move away from Merseyside will be a win-win situation for all parties involved. He hasn’t played a substantial role and few Everton fans would mourn his departure.

To put things into perspective, Wolverhampton Wanderers should make a move for Lookman to provide cover and competition for Helder Costa.

Wolves made a bright start to their Premier League campaign but a losing streak of six games derailed their campaign to a large extent. However, the Premier League new boys are now back with a bang, registering consecutive victories over Chelsea, Newcastle and Bournemouth. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men climbed up to 7th in the standings with an impressive 2-0 win over Bournemouth this week.

Raul Jimenez has spearheaded the attack very effectively with his hold-up play and goalscoring instincts but Wolves have been hit hard by the lacklustre displays of Helder Costa. Two assists from 17 games aren’t exactly great numbers, although credit must be given to the Portuguese international for putting in the hard yards and showing plenty of tenacity.

However, Costa hasn’t really worked wonders for Nuno Santo either. He has excelled with his ability to run at defences and initiate counter-attacks. Agreed, he is an asset to Wolves’ counter-attacking style of play but they need someone who can produce better results, Costa has let the team down with his poor final passes, inappropriate decision-making and some ridiculous finishing.

Now, it will be hard to term Ademola Lookman as an upgrade on Helder Costa but he can certainly add more value to the squad than someone like Adama Traore who has failed to live up to his billings. The presence of a promising youngster on the bench waiting to gain the manager’s trust might just push the Portuguese international to the limits.

Well, it will be harsh to say that Lookman can only prove to be a catalyst for Costa. In fact, a player of his calibre can bring a lot to a team like Wolves. Lookman is an excellent fleet-footed right-winger who not only has the ability to torment defences with his raw pace and dribbling skills but can also contribute a lot with his link-up play and intelligence. In other words, he can light up the scene with moments of sheer brilliance.

Lookman is a bombshell who is just waiting to explode and Wolves can bag a massive coup by snapping him up in January.
