Why Wolves must make a move for Preston’s Ben Davies in the summer

Back in October 2019, the Sun had claimed that Wolves were one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Preston North End defender Ben Davies.

Ben Davies, 24, is a Preston North End academy graduate who broke into the team two years ago after loan spells across the Football League. The defender has been one of the impressive performers for the Lilywhites side this season, having made 41 appearances last term. He has made 28 Championship appearances so far as Alex Neil’s side chase promotion.

Meanwhile, Wolves signed Daniel Podence, Luke Matheson, Leonardo Campana and Enzo Loiodice to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window. TAs far as their European adventure is concerned, the Wanderers have put a step in the Europa League’s round of 16 with a 4-0 thrashing of Espanyol in the first leg at Molineux.

Wolves, who are fighting hard to achieve a place in the Champions League next term, have conceded 32 goals in 27 games. Jesus Vallejo cut short his loan spell in January and returned to Real Madrid, while Ryan Bennett joined Leicester City on loan until the end of the season.

Willy Boly’s return from injury has been a boost for Nuno Espirito Santo but in his absence, the likes of Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss filled in well at the back. To put things straight, Wolves are short in numbers at the back and Nuno must make it a priority to sign a central defender during the summer transfer window. Having said that, he should rekindle his interest in Ben Davies.

At the age of 24, Davies has played over 200 games in his career which is certainly impressive. He has been a regular fixture at the back for Preston over the last few seasons. In 2017/18 season, the Englishman made 34 appearances in the Championship before turning out 40 times last season.

A central defender by trade, Davies is equally adept playing at left-back. His versatile nature would be a huge asset for Nuno, who could either deploy him at left wing-back or in a back three alongside Coady and Boly.

At 24, Wolves must not think twice before plotting a summer swoop for the Preston star.
