Wolverhampton Wanderers target former Real Madrid star Pepe but would it be a great move or will he flop in the Premier League?
He’s won the Champions League three times, three La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, three FIFA Club World Cups and numerous other trophies, but can he do it in the Premier League? That’s what Wolves and manager Nuno Espirito Santo wants to find out, according to the Mirror.
The Portuguese star had his contract terminated by former club Besiktas earlier this month due to various reasons and was even linked with a move to Wolves over the summer. But nothing materialized as the 35-year-old opted to stay at the Turkish side and now with Pepe being a free-agent, it gives Nuno a chance to get his man.
While he is on the wrong side of 30, the former Los Blancos man is an excellent defender and his experience playing for Real Madrid and Besiktas makes him even valuable. Wolves are 10th in the Premier League and have had a wonderful first six months in their return to the English top flight. But to continue in this manner, Wolves need some back-up.
While they’ve conceded only 21 goals, which is less than Arsenal andand Manches United, Wolves have scored only 19 goals which has affected them this season. Nuno’s main target should be a striker for the January window, someone who can help Raul Jiminez and improve the team’s standing. However, given that defenders like Pepe don’t arrive every-day for free, Santo should consider making a move for the 35-year-old.
While he won’t be able to play every game in the Premier League, his leadership and always ready for battle attitude will help the club in spades as the fixture list becomes more and more congested. Not only that, his experience winning multiple trophies for Real Madrid and Besiktas makes him even more valuable for any manager.
Also given that Jorge Mendes is the Portuguese’s agent, it simply makes things that much easier to Nuno Espirito Santo. The club have already signed Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Rui Patricio, all thanks to Mendes and now thanks to Mendes once again, Nuno could bring in a world-class star.
