According to Express and Star, Wolves youngster Dion Sanderson is wanted by several Championship sides ahead of the 2020/21 season.
The report suggests that Cardiff City want him back after he impressed in his loan spell. Clubs like Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday, and Huddersfield Town are also in the hunt for the English youngster, who has shown a lot of potential in recent times.
Born in England, Sanderson came through the ranks of Wolves’ system. He was impressive for the club’s youth sides, making 72 appearances for the U18 and U21.
The youngster has already made his debut for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as he featured in the EFL Cup loss to Aston Villa. However, due to a lack of opportunities, he was sent on loan to Cardiff City for the second half of the 2019/20 campaign. He featured in 10 games for the Welsh outfit and helped them reach the Championship playoffs.
At the moment, Wolves have six centre-backs in their ranks. Club captain Conor Coady has been a regular member of the squad and has led his side brilliantly as they reached the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
Willy Boly and Roman Saiss have also done a decent job so far despite the former spending the majority of the campaign on the sidelines due to injury. Ryan Bennett is also another experienced member of the squad. Apart from them, they also have Roderick Miranda and Max Kilman.
However, Saiss (30), Boly (29), and Miranda (29) have just one more year left on their contracts. And if they depart, Wolves’ numbers at the back would reduce. Therefore, they should avoid any move for Sanderson.
The youngster has already been with the senior squad and his display with Cardiff City should make Wolves believe in the centre-back. He could go on to be useful for them in the future.
The 20-year-old should be given enough opportunities in the upcoming season so that he could develop himself and be ready when the old guns depart in the future.
At 20, Sanderson has already shown immense potential. At the same time, most of Wolves’ central defenders are ageing and wouldn’t have much to offer in the future. Thus, it would be wise if they keep hold of the youngster and groom him from the future.
