World No. 88 Rebecca Peterson locks horns with Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai in the quarterfinals of the WTA Andorra Open on Friday.
After coming into the tournament on the back of a run to the finals in the ITF event in Meitar, Rebecca Peterson has continued her rich vein of form in Andorra. She has made it to her third consecutive quarterfinal.
In the round of 32, the Swedish player defeated Dutch player Arantxa Rus in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. She produced a solid performance in the round of 16 against Daria Snigur. The seventh seed had a disappointing win percentage of just 50 on her first serve. Peterson had an impressive win percentage of 77. The match ended 6-4, 6-1 in favor of the 27-year-old Peterson.
The 33-year-old has been in immaculate form so far in the competition. She came into the tournament after a shock exit in the first round of the WTA 125 event in Midland, USA.
The top seed is yet to drop a set in the competition so far. She began her campaign in Andorra with a comprehensive performance against Nina Stojanovic. Shuai did not give the young Serbian any freebies during her thumping 6-1, 6-4 win. In the round of 16, Shuai started the match by breaking Sophie Chang’s service game. Both women failed to hold their service games as the match rolled on. Chang committed 11 double faults compared to just 1 from Shuai. The match eventually ended 6-4, 6-4 after Shuai held serve.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1.
Prediction: Zhang Shuai to win in three sets.
