Polish youngster Weronika Falkowska will lock horns with the in-form Ana Konjuh in the quarterfinals of the WTA Andorra Open on Friday.
The 22-year-old has achieved decent success in the doubles circuit this season. As far as her results in singles competitions are concerned, she has bagged one title in Estonia and finished runner-up in two more ITF events.
Falkowska began her campaign in Andorra with a hard-fought win against Jacqueline Cristian. The world’s No. 143 won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In the round of 16, Falkowska defeated fifth seed Dayana Yastremska in another closely contested encounter. 18 double faults from Yastremska helped Falkowska but take nothing away from the grit and determination showed by the Warsaw-born player en route to her 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win.
The 24-year-old has been in sensational form as of late. She came into the tournament after winning ITF events in Slovakia and Italy. Konjuh began her campaign in Andorra with a solid win against Carole Monnet in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
In the round of 16, Konjuh played some scintillating tennis to make light work of third seed Tatjana Maria. The Croat won the first set 6-3. The experienced German began the second set on a fine note and won the first couple of games. However, Konjuh managed to bounce back and win the next six games to win the encounter 6-3, 6-2.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have not faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Ana Konjuh to win in straight sets.
