Belgian veteran Yanina Wickmayer locks horns with Olympic silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova in the round of 32 of the WTA Angers Arena Loire Open on Monday.
Yanina Wickmayer
The 33-year-old has fared better in the doubles circuit this year. She won the doubles event at the Korea Open alongside Kristina Mladenovic. However, a few decent results in singles events have popped up every now and then.
Wickmayer reached her first and only singles final of this year so far at the ITF event in Israel. Priscilla Hon ousted her in the final. At the ITF 25K event in Petange, Wickmayer made it to the quarterfinals. The former world No. 12 had a disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded WTA 125 event in Andorra. She lost to second seed and fellow Belgian, Alison Van Uytvanck in the first round in straight sets.
Marketa Vondrousova
It has been an injury-ridden year for the 2019 French Open finalist. However, she has fired on all cylinders in the last couple of tournaments she has played. After making it to the third round at the Australian Open, the youngster from the Czech Republic made it to the semis of the Dubai Tennis Championships. However, she had to pull out prior to the match owing to a right adductor injury.
Her recent form has been exemplary. She won the doubles event in an ITF event in France in October and both the singles and doubles events in the ITF event in Shrewsbury in November.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Marketa Vondrousova. She defeated Wickmayer in the quarterfinals of the ITF event in Slovakia in straight sets.
Prediction: Marketa Vondrousova to win in straight sets.
