WTA Charleston Open 2023: Jessica Pegula vs Paula Badosa – Preview, Predictions, Head to head and Stats

Top seed Jessica Pegula will face the challenge of Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open

Jessica Pegula has been in good touch this season and is coming into this match high on confidence. Pegula has reached the semi-finals twice in her previous three events on the WTA tour.

The American has been very consistent in all the tournaments she has played so far this year but hasn’t quite been able to go all the way and clinch the title. She is seeded No.1 in Charleston and it is the perfect opportunity for her to get the first silverware of the season.

Jessica Pegula

Pegula started her campaign at the Charleston Open with a convincing straight sets win over Anna Blinkova in the first round. She followed it up with a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Irina-Camelia Begu to set up a quarter-final clash against Spain’s Paula Badosa.

Paula Badosa’s form coming into the match

Paula Badosa hasn’t been in the best of form since her injury ahead of the Australian Open earlier this year in January. The Spaniard has suffered early exits in all of her recent tournaments. However, she has looked better at Charleston and is coming into this encounter after convincing wins against Leylah Fernandez and Diana Shnaider in the first two rounds.

Head to head and Predictions

Pegula and Badosa have played each other once before on the WTA tour. The American emerged victorious on that occasion in 2022 after Badosa retired mid-way through the match and leads the overall head-to-head 1-0. Both players are very close to each other in terms of experience and rankings, making it difficult to predict the outcome of this match. We are expecting an intense contest with Pegula eventually edging out Badosa in three sets.
