World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will square off against world No. 6 Caroline Garcia in the group stage of the WTA Finals on Thursday.
Iga Swiatek
The 21-year-old has looked invincible at times this year. Swiatek came into the tournament after reaching the finals in the last three tournaments she competed in. At the US Open, she won her third Grand Slam of the year. In the Ostrava Open, she went down to Barbora Krejcikova in the final but just prior to the WTA Finals, Swiatek won the San Diego Open.
Swiatek began her campaign in the WTA Finals with a comprehensive win against Daria Kasatkina. The Polish sensation won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. However, she did survive a minor scare in the first set, when she had to save a couple of breakpoints before moving to a 3-0 lead. From thereon, it was all about Swiatek and how comprehensively she could defeat her opponent.
Caroline Garcia
The 29-year-old has also had a great season thus far. She has already won 3 titles thus far. At the US Open, Garcia made it to the semifinals. However, her results have not been convincing in the three tournaments she played leading to the WTA Finals. At the Japan Open and the San Diego Open, Garcia lost her first match while at the Guadalajara Open, she was ousted in the round of 16 by Sloane Stephens.
Garcia has started her WTA Finals campaign on a positive note. She got the better of the talented Coco Gauff in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 18 minutes.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1. In the 2019 Cincinnati Masters, Swiatek defeated Garcia in straight sets. The Frenchwoman leveled the head-to-head score earlier this year after beating Swiatek in the Poland Open quarterfinal in three sets.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
