Third seed Jessica Pegula will lock horns with fifth seed Maria Sakkari in the round-robin stage of the WTA Finals on Monday.
The American tennis pro finally won her first ATP 1000 title earlier this month after defeating Maria Sakkari in the finals in straight sets. She has had an impressive season thus far which has seen her reach the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open.
The 28-year-old might not have won any other title in the year but her run to the Madrid Open final and the semi-final appearances in the Miami Open, the Canadian Open, and the San Diego Open will give her a lot of confidence going into a tournament where she will face the best players in the world at the moment.
The 27-year-old has so far been quite inconsistent this season. She had a good start, reaching the finals in the St. Petersburg Open and the Indian Wells Masters. In between those two competitions, she also made it to the semis in the Qatar Open. The grass-court season wasn’t one to remember for the Greek star. Her only decent outing came at the Berlin Open where she made it to the semis.
Sakkari made it to the finals of the Emilia-Romagna Open and the Guadalajara Open but faced defeat on both occasions against Mayar Sherif and Jessica Pegula, respectively.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 3-2 in favor of Sakkari.
Prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in three sets.
