We are in for an exciting clash in the doubles event of the WTA Finals as Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens lock horns with Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday.
The Russian youngster is currently ranked No. 5 in doubles while her teammate is placed at No. 9. Kudermetova and Mertens reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, where they lost to Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova. The Russian-Belgian duo won the Dubai Tennis Championships and followed it up with a run to the final at the Qatar Open. Kudermetova and Mertens suffered another heartbreaking loss in the finals of the Miami Open. The 25-year-old managed to win the Italian Open alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Kudermetova and Mertens reunited at the Libema Open and made it to the finals before being ousted.
The two women are coming into this tournament after being forced to retire ahead of the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open.
The fifth-seeded team made it to the finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships but lost to Kudermetova and Mertens. At the French Open, they reached the semis, where they lost to Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. Kichenok and Ostapenko won the Birmingham Classic and made it to the finals in Eastbourne.
The duo entered Wimbledon as the fourth-seeded team and made it to the semis. They won their second title of the year at the Cincinnati Masters. They are coming into the tournament after being ousted in the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open by Krejcikova and Siniakova.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-1.
