Top seeds Gauff/Pegula will take on the experienced pair of Siegemund/Zvonareva in the group stages of the WTA Finals
Gauff/Pegula’s form coming into the match
Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have had successful starts in their singles matches at the 2023 WTA Finals. However, their performance in doubles has been less impressive as they suffered defeats in their first two encounters. They were surprised by Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in their first match, and then engaged in a three-set battle against Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, eventually losing. This mirrored their performance from the previous year’s season-ending championships, where they also failed to secure a win in all three matches. They will aim to break their five-match losing streak when they face Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva in the upcoming group stage match on Friday.
Pegula and Gauff reached the pinnacle of the doubles world rankings, but according to Pegula, their reign at the top might be short-lived. She indicated that both of them are inclined to shift their focus more towards singles, especially with Gauff’s recent triumph at the US Open. Although they are excited about participating in the Olympics, they are considering reassessing their commitment to doubles play after the event.
Siegemund/Zvonareva’s form coming into the match
The sixth-seeded pair of Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva secured a hard-fought win in their initial round-robin match at the GNP Seguros WTA Finals Cancun on Tuesday. They outlasted the fourth-seeded team of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova with a score of 6-3, 6-7(6), [10-5]. Siegemund and Zvonareva had a one-set and double-break advantage at 6-3, 5-2, but Krejcikova and Siniakova, who have won seven Grand Slam titles, staged a comeback. Despite Siegemund and Zvonareva serving for the match three times in the second set, the Czech duo broke back each time, leading to a tiebreak. In the decisive 10-point match-tiebreak, Siegemund and Zvonareva took a commanding 6-1 lead and eventually clinched the victory with a winning volley by Siegemund after leading 9-4.
Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva, who made a remarkable debut as partners by winning the 2020 US Open, continued their success by securing three more titles and reaching the US Open final again this year. These achievements in 2023 allowed them to qualify for their first WTA Finals as a team. However, they faced a loss in their second group stage match against Dabrowski and Routliffe. As of now, their record stands at 1-1 as they prepare to face Gauff and Pegula in their upcoming match.
