US star Coco Gauff will take on Czech champion Marketa Vondrousova in the group stages of the WTA Finals

Coco Gauff’s form coming into the match

Coco Gauff had a remarkable beginning to her singles competition, securing an impressive victory with a score of 6-0, 6-1 against Ons Jabeur. This victory was particularly significant as it marked her first-ever win at the WTA Finals, following a disappointing performance where she lost all three of her singles and doubles group matches in the previous year. Gauff’s next challenge was a match against her rival Iga Swiatek, who was ranked as the World No. 2. Unfortunately, Gauff was once again defeated by Swiatek. To advance to the next stage of the competition, the young player must now win her upcoming match against Vondrousova.

The upcoming challenge for Coco Gauff is the reigning Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova. Notably, Gauff has a positive track record against the Czech player, having won both of their previous encounters, including a straight-sets victory at the 2023 Canadian Open. In addition to her own match, Gauff is also relying on Iga Swiatek’s performance against Ons Jabeur, as a Swiatek win would provide the most straightforward route to the semifinals for Gauff.

Marketa Vondrousova’s form coming into the match

Marketa Vondrousova has had a strong season on the women’s tour, with an impressive record of 40 wins out of 55 matches. Her season highlights include capturing her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships and reaching the semifinals of the Linz Open in Austria. Leading up to the WTA Finals, the Czech No. 1 had a quarterfinal appearance at the US Open but experienced an early exit in the first round at the China Open.

However Vondrousova’s first appearance at the WTA Finals hasn’t been successful, as she suffered straight-set losses in both of her group matches against Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur. Despite these setbacks, there’s still a slim opportunity for her to advance beyond the group stage. To have any chance, she must secure a victory in her upcoming match against Coco Gauff.
