Turkish youngster Ipek Oz takes on 10th seed Leolia Jeanjean in the semifinals of the WTA Montevideo Open on Saturday.
The 23-year-old has reached her first semifinal at a WTA 125 event. She has had a promising run thus far in the competition and combined aggression with caution to dispatch her opponents with relative ease.
In the round of 32, Oz made light work of Uruguay’s Guillermina Grant. The world No. 214 won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. In the round of 16, Oz had to show her gritty side to get the better of Rosa Vicens Mas 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Oz went on to defeat a confident Darya Astakhova in the quarterfinals in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
The 27-year-old is one of the frontrunners to win the tournament. She has reached her fifth semifinal of the year with some dominating performances.
Jeanjean opened her campaign with a demolition of Argentina’s Solana Sierra. The Frenchwoman won the match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to sail into the round of 16. Jeanjean went on to face compatriot Harmony Tan and sealed a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory. In the quarterfinals, the Romanian athlete, Irina Bara, captured the first set but Jeanjean came back strongly to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Leolia Jeanjean and Ipek Oz have never faced each other on the tour as yet. However, we might see them square off more often in the future.
Prediction: Leolia Jeanjean to win in three sets.
