Third seed Tamara Zidansek begins her Montevideo Open campaign against world No. 148 Darya Astakhova in the round of 32 on Monday.
The Slovenian athlete made it to the semis in Adelaide before reaching the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career. Since then, her results in singles competitions have not been desirable. However, she has found decent success on the doubles front.
Semi-finalist in the 2021 French Open, Jessica Pegula ousted Zidansek in the third round in this year’s edition. The 24-year-old comes into the tournament on the back of an exit in the round of 32 at the WTA 125K event in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She would eye her first singles title of the season.
The 20-year-old has also not won a singles title so far this season. She reached her first ITF final in Georgia. However, she could not win the title as she lost to Anastasia Zakharova. Last month in Bulgaria, Astakhova made it to another final. This time she was defeated by Zeynep Sonmez.
Prior to the Montevideo Open, the young Russian took part in the WTA 125K event in Buenos Aires. She defeated Zidansek in the round of 32 but lost in the following match against Diana Shnaider.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 1-0 in favor of Astakhova. She defeated Zidansek in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the recently-concluded WTA 125K event in Buenos Aires.
Prediction: Tamara Zidansek to win in straight sets.
