Korea’s Jang Su-jeong will take on 7th seed Alize Cornet in the Round of 16 at the WTA 125K Paris tournament
Jang is a regular on the ITF circuit and has already won two ITF singles titles this season in Kazakhstan and Japan. The South Korean ace has made a commendable start to this WTA event in Paris, registering a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 win against France’s Fiona Ferro in her opening encounter.
The 28-year-old has not quite been able to establish herself at the WTA level but this is a golden opportunity for her to make a mark. It won’t be easy against a higher-ranked opponent like Cornet but Jang has the experience and ability to pull off a major upset.
Alize Cornet has come to Paris after an early exit from the Italian Open. The French star has had a very poor season by her standards. She has suffered early eliminations from most of the tournaments that she has participated in this year and her age seems to have taken a toll on her. However, you would expect that things would be relatively easier at this 125K event and it would be a big surprise if she doesn’t go deep into the tournament.
Cornet won her first round match against Ashlyn Krueger of the US in a comprehensive fashion. The first set was pretty close and the experienced French woman held onto her nerves to eventually emerge victorious 7-6, 6-3. She will certainly fancy her chances against Jang in the next round but there is no room for complacency. Cornet is one of the favourites to win the title and it would be a major upset if she fails to do so on home turf.
Date – Thursday, 18th May
Court Type – Clay outdoor surface
Telecast – Tennis Channel
Start Time – To be Announced
Location – Paris
Match details – Round of 16
Jang and Cornet have never played each other before on the WTA tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. On paper, Cornet is the outright favourite both in terms of experience and rankings. However, one can certainly not rule out the Korean and she is expected to put up a tough fight. We are predicting an intense encounter with Cornet eventually edging out Jang in three sets.
