Google data shows WWE dipping in popularity with time
World Wrestling Entertainment has been going around for a long time and has been a well-known brand among fans. But it looks like the popularity of the show is dipping with time.
For the first time since 2004, WWE has finished 2021 with its lowest month for Google web search, the weakest since Google Trends started.
Wrestling Business reported Brandon Thurston took to Twitter and posted a detailed picture of Google Web searches for WWE over some time, and it has dipped from the last few years.
“WWE finished 2021 with its lowest month for Google web search since 2004, which is as far back as Google Trends goes.”
The promotion’s viewership has also dipped significantly over the last few years. Recently SmackDown has witnessed some poor numbers in terms of ratings and viewership.
Stephanie McMahon opens about WWE struggling with numbers
Stephanie McMahon was interviewed with Forbes last year, where she acknowledged the low viewership numbers, which she attributed to the lack of fans in the arenas due to COVID.
“And without them [the fans], it’s just not the same. Our ratings fell off. We tried bringing in our developmental talent to see if that would help in terms of some type of audience, but it just wasn’t enough. Ultimately we had hoped to be back in arenas in the Fall, but when we realized that wasn’t gonna happen, we doubled down and invested with a new partner called The Famous Group, and we now have nearly one thousand virtual fans.” (H/t Post Wrestling)
Fans have started to get detached from WWE, especially with more prominent superstars like John Cena, Undertaker are no longer a part of the showbiz like they used to be. And with AEW becoming a prominent figure and rival for the promotion – it is making it more difficult for them.
