The WWE returned to Saudi Arabia for the Crown Jewel event, and it featured several incredible fights.
One of the talking points was Bray Wyatt picking up the Universal title by defeating Seth Rollins, however, the other title was also on the line.
Brock Lesnar faced his old MMA rival Cain Velasquez in a clash for the WWE title.
The Beast lost his UFC title to Velasquez during their MMA days, and this match had been hyped up by bringing Rey Mysterio into the storyline.
Paul Heyman and Mysterio were watching from ringside as they egged Lesnar and Velasquez, respectively.
The match started like a typical MMA with both fighters trying to find an opening.
Velasquez did get an opening and started to pound The Beast. However, the WWE Champion kept the title after making his opponent tap out in a kimura lock.
Mysterio had to enter the ring to stop Lesnar’s hold of Velasquez, and a few chair shots ensured that the bout went on for a little longer.
This was a disappointing match-up given that Velasquez and Lesnar have MMA history, and Cain could have given The Beast a run for his money.
This was Cain’s first proper fight in the WWE and while he might have beaten Brock in the UFC, wrestling is a different business.
The American isn’t the first to have been squashed by Lesnar, and the Beast gets a lot of pushes.
Lesnar has a history of destroying his opponents, however, there could be more to the story.
It could have been a story of “too soon” for Velasquez and maybe he needs to work a bit more on his wrestling skills before getting the W over Lesnar.
Also, handing the title to the former MMA star in his first match would have sent mixed messages about wrestling.
Even if Velasquez is an excellent athlete, it should be difficult for someone to waltz into the ring, defeat possibly the most dominant wrestler from the last decade and walk off with the title.
There is also the Mysterio angle, and the high-flyer certain will have something to say in the coming weeks.
The former MMA star certainly didn’t enter the promotion for one match which saw him get beat this easily.
Tyson Fury got a win over Braun Strowman, and it would be crazy if Velasquez leaves with a 0-1 record.
The WWE often builds a story which goes on for a few months, so you should expect Round 2 of Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez.
The Mysterio angle is intriguing too and there are no doubts that Velasquez will have his chance at revenge soon.
