Bully Ray posted a tweet wishing the late Mae Young on her birthday and the respect and fondness he has for the Hall of Famer are heartwarming
Bully Ray wrestled under the name Bubba Ray Dudley during his time in WWE. He was part of the legendary tag team The Dudley Boyz alongside D-Von Dudley.
They are former nine-time tag team champions in WWE. The Dudley Boyz are undoubtedly one of the best tag teams in the history of professional wrestling.
Mae Young, on the other hand, was famous for taking bumps well past the age of 80. She was enshrined into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2017, WWE introduced a tournament named Mae Young Classic in her memory.
She is a former one-time NWA Florida Women’s champion, NWA United States Women’s champion, and tag team champion. Young is a Slammy Award winner and one-time Miss Royal Rumble. She also won the California Women’s Championship on two occasions.
Mae Young was one tough woman. She was also very passionate about the business. However, on March 13, 2000, she did something that was unbelievably scary.
Mae Young was 77 years of age at the time. This was the peak time of WWE’s very popular Attitude Era. Mae had taken a powerbomb from the top rope through a table the week before at the hands of Bubba Ray.
If that wasn’t frightening enough, what happened the week after was jaw-dropping. Mae was wheeled out to the stage on Monday Night Raw by D-Von Dudley. Bubba lifted Mae out of the chair and delivered a devastating powerbomb from the top of the stage onto a table.
The Dudley Boyz were a dominant heel faction during that time and that moment only spurred fans to hate them even more.
“I have never thought of my age as any barrier, because I feel I can do anything these 15 and 16-year-old kids can do,” Young told writer Dave Scherer later that year for a Wrestling Digest article.
Bubba Ray tweeted the following on Mae’s birthday:
“Happy Birthday in Heaven Mae. Love you. 😃❤️
