Former WWE Champion Alberto del Rio announces end to MMA career
Mexican wrestler Alberto del Rio has spoken about his future assuring that he would like to get back to wrestling after switching to MMA.
Del Rio holds a 9-6 record in MMA. He last faced Tito Ortiz in 2019, losing by first round submission at Combate Americas 51. He is now going to pursue a career back in wrestling after a long duration. He is the only man in history to have been WWE, (WWE) World Heavyweight, Impact World, GFW Global, AAA Mega and CMLL World Heavyweight Champion.
Del Rio speaks on The Push saying: (h/t Fightful)
“No, I’m not fighting again. I did that last time with Tito Ortiz because I was working for that company and I want to put that company up there and I knew that by fighting, me going back to MMA, would bring sponsors and investors. It happened.”
“Unfortunately, COVID came and destroyed our asses and we couldn’t continue doing business. Then, that company doesn’t pay me part of the fighting money. I had to seek legal help to get the money that is mine. I don’t steal money. I don’t try to get something that I didn’t earn. I have no intentions of fighting again. Pro wrestling is my passion.”
Del Rio has wrestled all over the world and has been one of the most decorated names in wrestling history.
Del Rio has been one of the most accomplished wrestlers in his short time at WWE. He is a former WWE Champion and the World Heavyweight Champion twice each. He also won the 2011 Royal Rumble and the 2011 Money in the Bank ladder match, making him the only wrestler to win both in the same calendar year.
He left in 2014, after issues with the backroom staff but made his return in late 2015, alongside Zeb Colter. He also beat John Cena to win the WWE United States Championship. Del Rio had many issues with the WWE employees including multiple suspensions due to wellness policies.
