Booker T gets why WWE decided to go ahead with the zombie lumberjack match at WrestleMania Backlash
Last weekend’s WWE WrestleMania Backlash was a pretty good event. But it had one match that had everyone talking- the lumberjack match between Damian Priest and The Miz.
The twist here was that the lumberjacks were zombies, in a move which was solely to promote Batista’s upcoming movie, Army of the Dead.
The fight, as you can guess, got mixed reactions. Some seemed to enjoy watching it, while others thought it was corny, childish, and fatuous.
And Booker T, talking on the Hall of Fame podcast with Brad Gilmore, agreed with the latter’s opinion that the match was okay because it was a money-making opportunity for the company.
“I’m all down for getting the cheque and tying it into my product, my show here. We don’t know how much more money is going to be dished out or up things later… Batista made some money perhaps during the voice over, kicking the show off. My thing is, I was looking and even Chris Jericho said that it set wrestling back 30 years. But it was after someone had said the blood and guts match set wrestling back 30 years.”
Booker then mentioned that despite Chris Jericho’s comments about the match, ‘Y2K’ would have known that this match was not about pure wrestling skill but to be used as a promotional tool.
“Chris Jericho knows that thing was about getting a cheque. It was about promotion. A promotional tool to actually get this out there to get people to get to the drive here. A lot of people from the outside looking in, when they see something like that they go ‘man, this is corny, this is cheesy’.”
That’s a good point from Booker there. Didn’t Chris Jericho perform with his band, Fozzy, a handful of times on WWE RAW?
The thing is, stuff like this will always divide opinions. People agree that WWE sacrificed some integrity of the show when agreeing to do that.
The difference of opinion arises when people either understand, or fail to understand, why they would do it for money. And in all honesty, it did get people talking… right?
