Edge vs Randy Orton saw the best of the Viper come out
Bully Ray and Dave LaGreca were back at the Busted Open podcast as they dissected the Edge vs Randy Orton rivalry after Backlash.
Edge defeated Orton at WrestleMania 36 but the Viper got his revenge at Backlash. Dubbed as the ‘Greatest Wrestling Match’ ever, it was Orton who won thanks to a punt kick after a flurry of finishers from both sides.
Orton was back at his best heelish behaviour on this week’s Raw as he did the same to Christian. He goaded Captain Charisma to accept an unsanctioned match, but it didn’t work out for Christian in the end.
Ray and LaGreca were impressed by what Orton had done, and Bully went on to suggest that Orton needed Edge similar to how Stone Cold Steve Austin needed Vince McMahon to get the best out of him:
“For the past year and a half or so, I have been saying that Randy Orton needed the right guy and that’s when you see Randy Orton flourish”, claimed Bully.
“Edge is the right guy. Trust me, Randy even knows that. His heart knows that he needed Edge. Randy needed Edge to get to the next level of storytelling, the next level of emotional investment.
“Remember when Austin was on the show? Everybody needs somebody some time, just like Steve needed Vince McMahon.
“At this point in his career, Randy Orton needed Edge”
A rivalry for the ages
While we may not get to see Orton vs Edge anytime soon given the Rated-R Superstar’s injury, Bully even said that Orton needed Christian on Raw.
Bully added that it is difficult to go out and do it all by yourself, and this rivalry between Edge and Orton had an emotional connect with the fans that made it great.
Austin vs McMahon was the rivalry from the 90s in WWE/WWF. McMahon would wrestle Austin in several matches including Hell in a Cell as he tried to make his rival’s life hell.
However, Austin always found a way to get back at WWE corporate and that led to some epic matches with other wrestlers too.
Austin is a legend in WWE but Bully is right in saying that McMahon took him to another level.
That storyline ran for a while and even though it has been tried several times, none of them have matched to the Austin vs McMahon madness from the yesteryears.
