Cesaro defeated Seth Rollins to set up a Universal title clash against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania Backlash
WWE hosted a special retro edition of SmackDown with Teddy Long also making a surprise appearance.
While this seemed to be a bit of a gimmick to get more fans onto SmackDown, there were a few interesting storylines developing.
One saw the return of Jimmy Uso and how he wasn’t sure of following his brother, Jey’s, support of Roman Reigns.
That had a bit of a role to play in Cesaro earning a title shot. He faced Seth Rollins in a rematch from WrestleMania 37 there was some friction between the Architect and the Usos.
Cesaro used that to pick up the win and this confirmed his shot for WrestleMania 37. The Swiss also took out the Usos and Reigns to end SmackDown and also put out an emotional update:
“I think it’s fitting that I earned my first chance at a world/universal title on a throwback edition of #smackdown. I do believe in old school values. I believe in hard work paying off. I also believe that the biggest test is yet to come. Sunday May 16th, let’s do this!”
Can Cesaro finally win the big title?
The Swiss Superman was often overlooked before his time to shine in singles competition came. He won several tag titles as part of The Bar with Sheamus, and this is his first big shot at the Universal title.
Cesaro has been one of the unsung heroes in WWE and it is great he is getting the big singles opportunities now.
He performed quite well at WrestleMania 37 as he beat Rollins. However, taking on Reigns at WrestleMania Backlash will be a real test.
The Head of the Table has been incredible since turning heel and it is unlikely that he will lose the title. However, Cesaro will give a good account of himself and it will be interesting to see how this clash goes.
