WWE is returning to the United Kingdom for a major stadium event for the first time since the 1992 SummerSlam. Let’s take a look at the matches that are lined up for the upcoming PPV event.
Liv Morgan won the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match at the Money in the Bank PPV and cashed it in on the same night on Ronda Rousey to become the new SmackDown Women’s Champion. Rousey had her rematch at SummerSlam. However, a controversial finish to the match meant that Liv Morgan retained her title. Rousey attacked the referee after the match for making a mess and costing her the title. WWE went on to indefinitely suspend The Baddest Woman on the Planet and this meant that Morgan needed a new challenger.
A gauntlet match was announced for the August 5 episode of SmackDown. Aliyah, Sonya Deville, Natalya, Shotzi, Xia Li, Raquel Rodriguez, and Shayna Baszler took part in the match. Rodriguez put up a great display and defeated three opponents before the last entrant Shayna Baszler got the better of her to become the No. 1 contender for Liv’s title. This will be Liv’s second title defense and like the first one, this will once again be against a former MMA star.
Bayley shocked the WWE Universe and made her long-awaited return at SummerSlam. She did not come alone though. The Role Model had Dakota Kai and Io Sky for company. Since then, the menacing trio has assaulted Bliss, Asuka, and Belair whenever they have gotten an opportunity.
Many fans have drawn similarities between Bayley’s heel faction and the Shield who used to hunt down their prey in unison. After going back and forth for a few weeks, the dream match was made official. Asuka, Bliss, and Belair will team up to take on the villainous faction headed by Bayley at the upcoming Clash at the Castle PPV. With the amount of talent that will be seen in this match, it promises to be an intriguing affair and one that could certainly steal the show.
The Head of the Table – Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar in an epic Last Man Standing match at the Biggest Party of the Summer. He will now have to defend his title against the Scottish Warrior at WWE’s upcoming PPV.
Various reports were circulating several months ago that Drew McIntyre would be the one taking on Roman Reigns at Clash at the Castle. However, he wasn’t just handed the match. The former two-time world champion had to go through a feud with Sheamus and the Brawling Brutes to get the coveted title shot. McIntyre faced Sheamus in a Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook match and the latter picked up the crucial victory to cement his place on the Clash at the Castle card.
This will be the third title defense for Roman Reigns since unifying the WWE Championship and Universal Championship at WrestleMania 38. We saw Karrion Kross return to WWE and attack Drew McIntyre on the August 5 episode of SmackDown. Will the former NXT Champion have a say in the match between Reigns and McIntyre?
Gunther has been on a dominant run since moving over to the main roster. After squashing a few enhancement talents, he won the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Ricochet in the June 10 episode of SmackDown.
Since then, he has defended the title on only two occasions. The first one was a rematch against Ricochet while the other one was against Shinsuke Nakamura.
On the August 19 episode of SmackDown, Sheamus won a fatal 5-way match to become the No. 1 contender. This promises to be an interesting match between two physical competitors.
We were supposed to see this dream match at SummerSlam. However, an injury to Riddle meant that we would have to wait for a proper fight between the two. Now, the stage is set for a showdown between two amazing athletes.
Seth Rollins produced some great matches against Cody Rhodes before the American Nightmare suffered an injury. The Visionary focused his attention on Riddle and the two supreme athletes have been able to brew a heated rivalry. It is safe to say that this match could be one of the best ones to take place on the show.
Rey Mysterio and Edge go back a long way. They were tag team champions at one point in their careers. The Judgement Day took out Dominik Mysterio on the August 8 episode of RAW. Dominik also has some issues with Edge after the veteran accidentally speared him on the August 1 episode of WWE’s red brand.
The rivalry has intensified over the weeks. Dominik and Edge have not been able to sort out their differences. Rhea Ripley also seems to have cast a spell on Dominik as was evident on the August 29 episode of RAW where the Nightmare managed to take a steel chair away from the youngster without any fuss. This happened when Edge and Rey were busy brawling with Finn Balor and Damian Priest. Later in the show, Dominik asked Rey why he chose to partner with Edge. The Master of 619 explained that he needed experience going into the match with Judgement Day. Will Dominik turn on his father? Will he finally join The Judgement Day? WWE has also teased a Beth Pheonix-Rhea Ripley feud. Will we see a confrontation between the two powerhouses in Cardiff? This match will answer a lot of questions.
The PPV event will take place on Saturday, September 3. The venue for the event is the Millennium Stadium, also known as the Principality Stadium, in Cardiff, Wales. The stadium has a capacity of 74,000.
The start time for the show is 5:30 pm which is quite different from usual WWE shows that take place at midnight in the UK.
Clash at the Castle will be live streamed on the WWE Network.
