Former WWE Champion CM Punk rumored to return to professional wrestling
CM Punk is reportedly in talks for an in-ring return to All Elite Wrestling, according to many sources in the last few days.
Punk has been out of pro wrestling since the 2014 Royal Rumble. He’s had his moments with the company, including various allegations and lawsuits before his departure. He also made an unlikely return with an appearance on WWE with Fox Sports, called WWE Backstage.
As per the latest reports from Fightful Select, Punk has been in talks with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) about a potential return after a gap of almost 7 years.
There is no information on when CM Punk will potentially return in the ring, or any details of a contract with Tony Khan’s promotion. AEW has become a rival of WWE since The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega and businessman Tony Khan came up with the idea in 2019.
This comes after various reports stated that WWE veteran Daniel Bryan will be moving to AEW after a signing of a contract. The duo shared a bitter rivalry in WWE and could continue it on AEW, if they both join successfully.
Why did CM Punk leave WWE?
CM Punk was arguably the biggest Superstar in WWE from 2011-2014 along with John Cena. He shared a rivalry with the 16-time Champion, but was not happy with the treatment of the creative and backroom staff in WWE.
CM Punk cut the famous “pipebomb” promo in 2011, before winning the WWE Championship match with John Cena at the Money In The Bank pay per view, on the last day of his contract. However, Punk complained of wrestling while injured and never given the chance to rest. Punk also had a problem with veterans like The Rock being given WrestleMania main events, despite them showing up part time.
He eventually left and tried his hand in UFC, where he lost both of his fights. He has since then been active on social media, but not spoken about a return to pro wrestling.
