Dana White was asked about Yoel Romero getting released but he had a lot of bad news regarding some UFC roster cuts
Things don’t look good for the UFC at the moment with Dana White confirming that major roster cuts are going to happen over the course of 2020.
The president was speaking after the latest event with Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori serving as the main fight.
While that Middleweight bout was one for the ages, he was also asked about another former Middleweight.
Yoel Romero, who has faced some of the best in the division, was shockingly released by the UFC earlier in the week.
This came out of the blue as the Soldier of God is still one of the best in the division, despite being 43. White was asked how this came about and touched upon Romero losing four out of his last five fights.
However, the president also claimed that there could be around 60 cuts in the UFC.
White had earlier in the year suggested that all the jobs in the UFC would be safe, even during the Covid-19 outbreak.
While he kept his word in this regards, the latest comments are a bit of a shocker.
Romero might not have won a UFC title during his time in the promotion, however, he was one of the biggest earners in the promotion and had also a net worth of over $3million.
Even in his losses, he was making six-figure sums and the UFC seems to be cutting out on that. Romero had multiple fights on his contract and it will be interesting to see what is up for the UFC.
The Soldier of God might end up moving to another promotion, even at 43 but the UFC have been adding talents to their roster as well.
Dana White’s Contender Series has seen several fresh faces come in and paying them is a problem too.
However, the UFC has released Anderson Silva and Romero in recent weeks. They both were ageing and big earners in the promotion.
Saving on their salaries and spending it on 5-10 younger fighters makes business sense. The UFC has a bloated roster and Romero might not be the last big name to be culled.
