Roman Reigns beat The Undertaker, but it should have been the win that ended the WrestleMania streak
‘The Streak’ is the most prestigious and intriguing storyline associated with WrestleMania, at least over the past 2 decades or so.
The Undertaker was unbeaten in WrestleMania events since his WM debut back in WrestleMania VII against Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka.
The streak had bloated to 15-0 by the time WrestleMania XXIV had arrived. And his opponent in that event, Edge, revealed that he had the chance to end that streak.
Speaking to ESPN+’s SportsNation (h/t wrestlinginc.com), ‘The Rated R Superstar’ said he adamantly denied being the ‘1’ in Undertaker’s streak for various reasons.
“In the lead-up to it, I was asked, ‘What do you think about ending The Streak’ and I said no. Adamantly no. I don’t think it ever should’ve ended until what we knew was his final WrestleMania, and then even no. I just didn’t think it was right.”
Edge believes Roman Reigns beating The Undertaker to break The Streak would have been more fitting
Edge said that he did not think that his career ever needed that push. Instead, he wanted WWE to save that for someone they wanted to rocket to the top.
And that someone, according to Edge, was Roman Reigns.
“I also didn’t think at that point in my career I needed it. I think that that should have been saved for someone who you want to strap the rocket to and you know and you trust and is—to me, Roman Reigns was the guy to do it.”
Reigns beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 to become just his 2nd defeat at the grandest stage of all.
The first was, of course, Brock Lesnar, who finally put the 21-fight winning streak to a halt at WrestleMania 30.
But in all honesty, Reigns has done pretty well for himself. He did get to be only the second man to beat The Phenom in 27 matches and that’s a big achievement in itself.
