Gunther has become only the third WWE Superstar since 2011 who has held the Intercontinental Championship for over 200 days.
Since Triple H took over the helms from Vince McMahon, there seems to have been a lot of attention given to the mid-card titles. Rightly so, as these titles were once considered almost at par with the world titles. Various Hall of Famers held the titles during their careers and established each other’s legacies.
As per the latest reports, Vince McMahon is returning to WWE’s Board. Does this mean that the recent importance being given to the mid-card titles will come to an end? It’s too early to comment on that. However, one thing can be said with conviction and that is the fact the WWE Universe has enjoyed how Triple H has tried to bring back the aura around the mid-card titles.
Gunther’s dominant run as the Intercontinental Champion has coincided with the Game’s term at the helm. The former NXT Superstar recently became only the third WWE Superstar since 2011 to have held the title for over 200 days. Gunther joined Cody Rhodes and Shinsuke Nakamura. Long and impactful title reigns give more prominence to the Championship and that has been the case with Gunther.
When did Gunther win the Intercontinental Championship?
After making his main roster debut on the 8 April 2022, episode of SmackDown, Gunther terrified his opponents and squashed them for easy wins.
On the June 10 episode of SmackDown, Gunther defeated Ricochet to become the first Austrian wrestler to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
Gunther has gone on to successfully defend the title against the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura, Sheamus, and Rey Mysterio. His run as the champion has been praised by fans and critics alike.
