Io Shirai faced off against Charlotte Flair recently for the NXT Women’s Title
NXT superstar lo Shirai responded to Charlotte Flair’s tweet after their epic battle on NXT. The Champion was disqualified in her title match against the Japanese star.
Before the game, Charlotte, the daughter of wrestling icon Ric Flair, said that she was eager to face off against the Japanese athlete.
“How I approach every opponent is different, but I always have the utmost respect for talent who come from overseas and don’t speak the language and move to a different country,” Flair said.
“It blows my mind. But for Io, I think what makes this one different is we’ve never touched. We’ve never even been in the ring together. It’s completely fresh and something to build off of.”
Wednesday night’s match stood for more than just the NXT Championship, as it was an opportunity for Shirai to showcase her ability as one of the best wrestlers in the world and for Flair to continue to elevate her title reign. She grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte took on a new challenger in the form of the lethal Shirai. Flair was extremely confident coming into this match, Shirai showed just how dangerous a competitor she is, weathering an early onslaught from Flair and doing some damage to the Champion.
Flair did the same though, but it wasn’t enough, so she disqualified herself and punished Shirai, paving the way for Rhea Ripley to make her big return to NXT.
Charlotte decided enough was enough and used a Kendo stick on Shirai’s back. That caused the bell to ring and Shirai to win the match, but Charlotte then wrapped Shirai’s leg around a pole and was going to crush it with the metal stairs.
That’s when Ripley came out of the ring and hit Charlotte from behind. She then picked up a stunned Charlotte and sent her face-first onto the side of the ring.
