“I don’t know that he is going to return to fight” – Chael Sonnen has an interesting take on Cain Velasquez’s WWE future

Cain Velasquez was released from WWE recently after just a few months with the company

Former UFC star Chael Sonnen had his say about the future of Cain Velasquez. The 37-year-old joined WWE from UFC and even fought against Brock Lesnar, but was released by the company recently.

Velasquez lost his only televised WWE match to Brock Lesnar

Velasquez hasn’t spoken about what the future holds for him, but Sonnen had his own theories. WWE released many stars during a crazy couple of days, such as Rusev and EC3, and it was a difficult moment for many.

Sonnen wasn’t sold on Velasquez returning to the UFC:

“Sometimes you are forced into a spot. Sometimes you are a wounded animal in a corner, and you have only one way out that is straight forward.

“Motivation’s an interesting thing. When Cain’s got a couple of options, you can see where the motivation’s gets spread around. When an option’s gone, there is only one left.

“I don’t know that he is going to return to fight. I don’t know that I fully believe his time in professional wrestling is done.”

No gimmick for Velasquez

Although Lesnar squashed the former UFC Heavyweight Champion easily in their title bout, Sonnen has another theory for this.

He believed that Velasquez fighting under his real name and not a gimmick and that could keep the door open for a return.

Sonnen also said that Velasquez had been training to fight in another promotion under a mask, and that would not be broadcast in the US.

The former UFC star also suggested that Velasquez was the low-man as WWE dealt with their budget cuts, but the former champ would not be forced into doing something he didn’t want.

Velasquez never really got to show his in-ring talents during his fleeting appearances with WWE. He could continue fighting under another moniker or for another promotion too.

AEW is one of the biggest brands right now while ROH, TNA and Impact could all do with someone of Velasquez’s abilities.
