John Cena left red-faced as he apologizes to Chinese fans for calling Taiwan a country in a promotional interview for Fast and Furious 9
WWE superstar John Cena was the face of the company for nearly a decade. The 16-time WWE champion has recently found success in Hollywood.
And one of the biggest movies that he has been a part of is Fast and Furious 9, a series that featured Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as a central figure.
In a promotional interview for the movie with Taiwanese broadcasting network TVBS, Cena referred to Taiwan as a country- something which would always irk the Chinese population.
As expected, he soon came out with an overly apologetic video in Mandarin, clarifying his comments and apologizing to the Chinese masses on Sina Weibo (h/t SCMP).
“Hi China, I’m John Cena. I’m in the middle of Fast and Furious 9 promotions. I’m doing a lot of interviews. I made a mistake in one of my interviews. Everyone was asking me if I could use Chinese – [movie] staff gave me a lot of information, so there was a lot of interviews and information. I made one mistake. I have to say something very, very, very important now. I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry about my mistake. I apologise, I apologise, I’m very sorry. You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese people. My apologies. See you.”
Why is John Cena missing from WWE since WrestleMania 36?
Cena’s last match at WWE came all the way back in 2020 when he took on ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Funhouse match at WrestleMania 37.
He lost that match and is yet to be seen on the promotion again. Since then, and even before that match, Cena has been busy with shooting for shows and movies.
F9 is one such movie where he spent a majority of his time on the sets. It released worldwide on May 19th and has already broken post-Covid-19 box office records.
The film is scheduled for a release in the USA on 25th June 2021. Apart from that, he has been on the sets of Peacemaker, an HBO series.
But amidst all this, he has been rumoured to make an appearance on the 16th July episode of SmackDown, which is the first show in a 25-city live tour to be undertaken by the company during the SummerSlam period.
