Drake Maverick was a victim of a WWE release but earned praise from John Cena,
WWE legend John Cena has taken to Twitter to praise Drake Maverick following the news that Maverick has been released by WWE. Maverick was among eight names released on Thursday.
Other names that have been released are John Morrison, Tegan Nox, Shane Thorne, Jaxson Ryker, Drake Maverick, Isaiah Scott, Top Dolla and Ashante Adonis.
Maverick posted an awesome video in reaction to his release, which Cena quote tweeted with:
“This is worth a watch. Very well done and very powerful message by a gifted performer.”
The reason for the releases is said to be budget cuts. It’s sad to see string of WWE releases that the company has done lately. Even former champions and recent main eventers have been a part of the ever growing list.
If the trend continues there can be more stars who can be soon released.
Drake Maverick’s history as a wrestler
Maverick came into the limelight during his stint at Impact Wrestling (formerly TNA), where he was famously known as Rockstar Spud. He plied his trade in the British independent circuit for a decade or so. He won several championships in promotions like International Pro Wrestling: United Kingdom, One Pro Wrestling, Revolution Pro Wrestling and XWA Wrestling.
After a decade, in 2012 he came to the TNA program British Boot Camp, where he signed a contract following the competition win. He was a two-time X Division Champion in TNA/Impact,
Maverick signed a contract with WWE after leaving TNA in October of 2017, October. He was named as the on-screen General Manager of 205 Live, the brand created by WWE for their cruiserweight division. He even served as the manager of AOP on Raw.
After a couple of years, he became more active as an in-ring competitor, where he went on to become an eight-time 24/7 Champion. He was released by WWE in April 2020 due to budget cuts after the COVID-19 pandemic fall-out.
Despite his release, WWE still allowed Maverick to compete in the multi-month Interim NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament. And after being on the losing side, he was given a new WWE contract and joined the NXT brand.
