Talks of CM Punk making a WWE return occasionally spring up
It has been more than 7 years since CM Punk made an in-ring appearance in the WWE. His last match was at the 2014 Royal Rumble on the 26th of January.
‘The Best in the World’ had quite a successful career in the promotion. His WWE Championship reign of 434 days is the sixth longest in the history of the promotion.
He was an integral part of the ‘New Nexus’, had numerous feuds with John Cena, all in all he achieved a lot in very little time.
After 2014, Punk tried his hand at MMA, and landed directly in the greatest MMA promotion in the world – UFC. He was beaten from pillar to post in both of his UFC fights, and was dubbed as one of the worst fighters of all time.
He currently plies his trade as a commentator in Cage Fury Fighting Championships.
Occasionally, rumors of Punk making a return to the WWE pop up. In 2019, he was seen on Fox Sports 1 in the series WWE Backstage, triggering talks of a comeback. However, the show was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, playing spoilsport to Punk’s plans.
More recently, legendary WWE superstar John Cena’s dad John Cena Sr. addressed the possibilities of CM Punk making a return to the WWE.
He didn’t sound pretty sure that Punk would return. Speaking to Dan Mirade of ‘Boston Wrestling MWF’ in recent days, Cena Sr. said:
“CM Punk has been out for a really long time. Are you really sure that he would be able to make a difference if he came back? With all the young talents out there, with the assets that have been created over the years, what would you have to give to wrestling? I think the solution – as far as I’m concerned – would be to take veterans like Daniel Bryan or Samoa Joe and use them wisely in the last phase of their careers.” [via Wrestling World]
Cena Sr. then revealed why he felt that Punk wouldn’t return. He claimed that he did not find Punk interested in getting back into the wrestling business.
Cena Sr. was quoted as saying:
“Is he really interested in getting back into this business? If it were, he’d be back in a long time. My opinion is that he would be more suited to a backstage role at this point.”
