Kurt Angle came into WrestleMania 22 as the champion but it was Rey Mysterio who won the gold in a triple threat match
WWE legend Kurt Angle will go down as one of the greatest stars to have ever graced the ring.
The Olympic gold medallist made a seamless transition into the world of wrestling and won several titles.
Angle also was involved in some great storylines during his time in WWE, and one saw him defend the title at WrestleMania 22.
This was a triple threat match with Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton also in the fray. Mysterio, who won the Royal Rumble that year, came into this clash with a lot of emotion.
He had been majorly affected by the passing away of his close friend Eddie Guerrero, and pretty much every WWE star had been saddened by the shocking demise a few months back in 2005.
Mysterio was able to channel some of these emotions to pick up an unlikely win, first at the Rumble and then at Mania.
Angle and Orton were the bigger men but it was little Rey that got the job done. With WrestleMania 37 just around the corner, Angle shared some great moments from the triple threat match.
The Olympian explained that he was happy to lose the title to Mysterio since this was all done for Guerrero:
“Wrestlemania is 7 days away! I remember this match distinctively because it was the one time that I’ve never been happier to lose the world championship, than I was for @619iamlucha-he did it for Eddie. #itstrue”
The match certainly was great for some of the angles and bumps but the celebrations afterwards were great too.
WrestleMania 37 features another triple threat match
While there was a lot of emotion at WrestleMania 22 after this clash, WrestleMania 37 also has some big battles.
Roman Reigns defends his Universal title in a triple threat match as he takes on Daniel Bryan and the Rated-R Superstar, Edge.
Edge and Reigns come into this clash as heels while Bryan attacked the pair on the most recent SmackDown.
It would be quite a story for Edge to win the title more than a decade after his last WWE clash. Edge had to retire after picking up a serious injury but there could be something special taking place in a week.
