Kurt Angle revisits that WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 22
Kurt Angle lost his WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 22.
It was a triple threat match for the title that also featured Randy Orton. The fight was highly entertaining with all three wrestlers being involved in back-and-forth pinfall attempts.
Mysterio had the chance to pin Angle, but the defending champion kicked out. Instead, ‘The Master of the 619’ pinned ‘The Viper’ for the pin.
‘The Wrestling Machine’ was recollecting the details on the match and revealed why he wasn’t the one to be pinned by Mysterio.
After praising Mysterio on The Kurt Angle Show, Kurt was asked if it would have been a bigger moment had Mysterio pinned him instead of Orton.
And he revealed that it wasn’t going to be possible because the promotion was trying to protect his ‘Wrestling Machine’ character.
“Well that wasn’t going to happen. They were trying to protect me at that particular time. My ‘Wrestling Machine’ character. They had me finish strong at WrestleMania. I did not lose the match. I made both of them tap out without the ref looking. They made me look as strong as possible without winning or retaining the title. That’s what they did with me.”
That was the last WrestleMania appearance of his career during that WWE run. After that, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame by WWE and served as a General Manager on RAW for a brief stint.
He then made his last WrestleMania appearance at WrestleMania 35 where he lost to Baron Corbin.
He retired shortly after and even turned down a new deal to become Matt Riddle’s manager on the show.
