Kurt Angle opens up about Vince McMahon rejecting “alien” wrestlers for ECW

Published by

WWE had acquired ECW with the show getting a run under Vince McMahon but Kurt Angle shared some other interesting aspects of the revival

Kurt Angle spoke on his latest podcast, The Kurt Angle Show, about his time in ECW and WWE. Vince McMahon decided to revive the company by creating WWE ECW in June 2006.

Angle was chosen as the second pick for the company after Rob Van Dam. He also stated that McMahon promised to make him the face of the brand.

Furthermore, the former Olympic Gold Medalist talked about the switch to SyFy netowrk. SyFy were given the broadcasting rights, which then was strange for wrestling on a science fiction and fantasy network. Angle said the company even asked WWE to use science fiction characters like aliens, but Vince McMahon rejected the ideas.

“It was odd,” said Angle. ( h/t Kurt Angle Show)

“We didn’t correlate the two, we couldn’t understand it. I know the SyFy channel is a quality T.V. station, a quality network, it just wasn’t the right fit. The crazy thing was the SyFy channel approached Vince saying they wanted two alien wrestlers on the show and Vince said no immediately. He said we’re not doing that, that’s way too tacky.”

Angle discussed his time in ECW and how he suffered various different injuries. Angle showed up to a meeting showing his injuries to the employees. Kurt Angle said his major injury to his hamstring occurred during a match on a house show to Rob Van Dam.

Inception of ECW

RVD was made the face of the company after the formation of WWE. He went on to become the WWE Champion and ECW Champion at the same time. Although, Van Dam was stripped of the ECW title, after failing a drug test in 2006.

Kurt Angle has won 21 total championships and overall is a 13-time world champion. He is the only pro-wrestler in history to have won the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, WCW Championship, the TNA World Heavyweight Championship and the IGF’s IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Angle is also the only person to have been King of the Ring and King of the Mountain. He is also one of the few men to have held both the WWE and TNA Triple Crowns.
