NXT Superstar Mercedes Martinez was legitimately knocked out in a NXT match and rushed to hospital but there is a positive update
In a match on NXT with Jake Atlas, Xia Li and Boa of Tian Sha, Mercedes Martinez suffered the injury after taking a spinning heel kick by Li. The heel kick ended Martinez’s match who could not continue.
The referee denoted an X sign showing that she was unable to retain her normal stance and had to be taken to hospital. He called for the bell and the win was given to Tian Sha. Martinez is 40 years old has been a professional wrestler after making her debut in 2000.
Martinez was attended to behind before going to a nearby hospital for further investigation. Three weeks ago, Lio Rush announced his unfortunate retirement from the sport due to injury.
According to Bryan Alvarez (h/t Ringside News), the statement about her situation is:
“She was hospitalized last night after Xia Li hit a spin kick to the jaw that knocked her out. They did the referee stoppage finish, it wasn’t like a worked finish, it was legit. She was taken to the hospital and evaluated. I was under the impression this morning that she’s alright, but that’s all we know.”
Her return will be taken slowly after suffering a damaging blow in the match.
Mercedes Martinez moving about in WWE
Martinez has been in the wrestling industry for over two decades having joined WWE late in 2017. She was a part of the 2017 and 2018 Mae Young Classic tournaments, where she squared up against the likes of Shayna Baszler and Meiko Satomura. Her career speaks volume about her character with various accomplishments to show for it.
Mercedes is a class act and plays great as a heel or baby. She is the center piece of any division she’s in though unfortunately she’s always been a relatively big fish in a small pond. Her late entry into WWE is seemingly on the rise as she performs impressively on NXT week-in, week-out.
She was part of the Retribution storyline but WWE removed her from that faction and sent her back to NXT where she has been doing quite well.
