WWE NXT has a new women’s champion in Raquel Gonzalez

WWE NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver saw a big title change in the form of the NXT women’s championship.

Raquel Gonzalez took on the title-holder Io Shirai in a highly-anticipated encounter of power vs speed.

And it was the former that triumphed as Gonzalez bettered Shirai to win her first singles title on the Black and Gold brand. This has really been a ground-breaking year for her.

Her win against Shirai was both shocking and expected. It was expected in the sense that it was about they pushed ‘Big Mami Cool’ onto bigger things

And it was shocking in the way that she was just the first women to kick out of Shirai’s top rope moonsault. The way in which her win came really shows how NXT wants to make her the top dog in the female division.

James, who is currently signed to WWE RAW herself, sees Raquel as the future of the NXT division and thinks she is destined for great things in the future.

“What an amazing moment for Raquel. She has made such an impact since the day she [walked in]. She’s just been, like, levelling, levelling, levelling up and I think that she’s going to be a star, both here, and onwards. She’s destined for greatness and I think that the hard work that she has put in is just awesome to see that delivered.”

This loss doesn’t take the shine off Shirai’s aura of greatness on the brand, though. And even James, in the same podcast, went on to call her the ‘greatest’.

But this seems like Raquel’s time and it shouldn’t be long before a long title reign translates into a call up to the main roster in a few years’ time; not just for her, but for Io as well.
