Former WWE star Paige discusses if she’ll ever return to the ring again
Former WWE Diva’s Champion Paige has admitted that she is absolutely scared to make an in-ring return after retiring due to a neck injury.
Paige announced her retirement on WWE Raw after WrestleMania 34 in April 2018 at the age of just 25. She is out of in-ring action permanently after sustaining a neck injury caused by a failed kick from Sasha Banks.
Paige sat down with NXT UK star Mark Andrews on his My Love Letter to Wrestling podcast, and revealed that she’d be terrified to step back into the ring:
“And even if I was able to come back, it’s always that mental block now because I thought I was good to come back the first time I had neck surgery and I was like confident, I was still doing the same things I did prior even though I probably shouldn’t have been doing that, you know, like wrestling move-wise and then to come back again, I would be completely terrified. Like in my head, I’m terrified to come back. Even if my heart is saying, ‘Yes! I would love to.’ It’s like getting over that mental block of ever being able to step back in the ring again.”
She is the first woman to win both the NXT Women’s title and the Diva’s title. Post her retirement, she switched to different executive roles. She was the SmackDown General manager for a brief period.
Paige will look to seek inspiration from WWE Superstars like Daniel Bryan and Edge, who made their return to competitive action after suffering career threatening injuries.
Why did Paige retire ?
Paige returned to WWE after suffering a neck injury a year prior. She was competing in a six-woman’s tag team match. A kick from Sasha Banks during a match in New York, caused major injuries to her neck once again. A second surgery was needed prompting her to announce her retirement from Wrestling in 2018.
“Unfortunately due to neck injuries I can no longer perform as an in-ring competitor. This is one of the hardest things I’ll ever have to say in my entire career,” she announced.
Paige is one of the most talented women’s wrestlers in WWE, winning the Diva’s title on her debut beating AJ Lee. She will be optimistic that despite the fear, she is able to return and beat all the odds.
