WWE fans will remember Curtis Axel for his time in the Stamford-based company as a member of The Nexus under his first ring name Michael McGillicutty. He is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Curt Henning aka Mr. Perfect.
McGillicutty was repackaged as Curtis Axel and achieved moderate success. He signed for WWE in 2007 and wrestled in Florida Championship Wrestling before moving on to the main roster.
Axel was released after his tenure with WWE ended in April 2020. However, last month the company re-hired him as a producer. The 42-year-old was spotted during the brawl that ensued between Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes on this week’s episode of RAW. He was among the officials who were trying to separate the two arch-rivals.
Not many people knew that Axel had been working backstage as a producer so it did come as a shock to watch the former FCW Florida Heavyweight Champion back on WWE Television.
Pro-wrestling achievements of Curtis Axel
Curtis Axel managed to win a few championships during his tenure as a wrestler in Vince McMahon’s company. In this segment, we will take a look at them. You might have forgotten that he was a Paul Heyman guy for a brief period of time.
As mentioned previously, Axel began his career in WWE under its developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling. He became the FCW Florida Heavyweight Champion on one occasion. He also won the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship on four different occasions with Tyler Reks, Health Slater, Brett DiBiase, and Kaval.
After moving on to the main roster, he won the Intercontinental Championship once. He also won the WWE (RAW) Tag Team Championship on two occasions with David Otunga and Bo Dallas respectively.
During his first reign with Otunga, the title was referred to as the WWE Tag Team Championship while in his second reign with Dallas, it was named the RAW Tag Team Championship.
